Although the risk of eruption is currently considered low, Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707. Granted World Heritage status by UNESCO as a ‘sacred place and source of artistic inspiration’, it has been the main theme of numerous works over the centuries, especially by Japanese print master Hokusai, with his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. A major destination for pilgrimages, Mount Fuji has been a sacred mountain since the 7th century. With a relatively easy ascent, taking between three and eight hours, some courageous climbers even tackle it at night for the privilege of watching a remarkable sunrise.
