About La Rochelle
La Rochelle, in Southwest France, is the historical capital of the province of Aunis and the administrative centre of the department of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its inhabitants are known as Rochelaises and Rochelais. With three ports (fishing, trade and yachting), the city is a first-class port complex and has been since the 12th century. One of the most remarkable features of its town planning are its arcades, which date back over 400 years. La Rochelle is a pioneer in urban ecology, having introduced the very first pedestrianised area in France in 1970, and the first self-service bicycles in 1974. It also held the first Car Free Day, in 1997. This fortified coastal city has numerous defence monuments, the most well-known being the mediaeval towers of the Old Port. The Francofolies music festival created in 1984 attracts over 122,000 spectators every year. In The Seven Crystal Balls, Tintin and Captain Haddock are strolling along the quayside at La Pallice dockyard, La Rochelle’s main seaport, when they discover the Pachacamac cargo ship where Professor Calculus is being held prisoner.
