The administrative centre of the PACA region and the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, Marseilles is one of France’s oldest cities, founded in 600 BC by sailors and Greek merchants, who named it Massalia. France’s first port, the Phocaean city enjoys more than 320 days of sun a year and features the Calanques National Park, which covers 8,300 hectares. Fada, pastaga, dégun, tarpin…Marseillais, an offshoot of the Provençal dialect, has its own distinct vocabulary. It has inspired many literary works, including those by legendary playwright Marcel Pagnol, in particular his Marseilles Trilogy: Marius, Fanny and César.
