Nice, pronounced Nissa in Nissart (the Niçoise language), is the administrative capital of the French department of Alpes-Maritimes. Situated some thirty kilometres from the French-Italian border, the city grew up on the shores of the Mediterranean, along the Bay of Angels, and at the mouth of the river Paillon. The most famous of the hills that dominate the city is the Cimiez, with its ancient ruins and park, where the Matisse Museum can be found. The Promenade des Anglais is one of the most famous avenues in the world and is used by around 100,000 vehicles daily. Happy Birthday in Nissart is Alegre natalici. The city’s “20th Century Heritage”-classified buildings include the Palais Meyerbeer, the Villa la Belle Époque and the St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral. Many films were made at its legendary Victorine film studios, which are still in use, for example Les enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise), directed by Marcel Carné and Mon oncle (My Uncle), directed by Jacques Tati. As for typical Niçoise cuisine, some of the best -known dishes are courgette flower fritters, pissaladière (flatbread with toppings) and Pan Bagnat (a type of tuna sandwich). The city’s motto is “Nicaea fidelissima” (Nice, Most Loyal City).
