About Aix-en-Provence
Nicknamed the City of a Thousand Fountains due to its many natural springs and basins scattered throughout the town, Aix-en-Provence was once the capital of Provence. Founded by the Romans in 122 BC under the name Aquae Sextiae, it is now the sub-prefecture of the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Aix has preserved a rich historic center, with its elegant townhouses, shaded alleys, the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, and of course the famous Cours Mirabeau. Every summer, it hosts the International Festival of Lyric Art, one of the most prestigious in Europe for opera and classical music.
Contrary to what one might think, Paul Cézanne, though deeply connected to the city, never exhibited there during his lifetime. Yet today, Aix-en-Provence is inseparable from the painter, who was born there, painted his famous Sainte-Victoire there, and now rests there.
