Nevers

Prefecture of the Nièvre department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, Nevers is known for its rich historical heritage, including the Ducal Palace, considered one of the first Loire castles, and the Cathedral of Saint-Cyr and Sainte-Julitte, notable for its contemporary stained glass windows. Located on the banks of the Loire River, the city offers a peaceful setting with winding old streets, landscaped riverbanks, and green spaces. The canal lateral to the Loire runs through the town, providing scenic walking and cycling paths. Nevers also attracts pilgrims from around the world thanks to the Sanctuary of Saint Bernadette, where the body of the Lourdes visionary rests. From the 17th to the 19th century, the city thrived through the faience (tin-glazed pottery) industry, a tradition still alive today in a few workshops. On the culinary side, the Négus, a caramel-coated chocolate confection invented in 1900 by the Grelier family, remains a beloved local specialty passed down through generations.
