The Pyrenees have long been seen as a wild, untamed natural frontier; wrapped in mist, home to bears and jagged peaks, these mountains were steeped in local legends — so much so that some summits remained unexplored until the 19th century.
One of the most iconic, the Vignemale, highest peak on the French side at 3,298 meters, was conquered in 1838 by the Countess of La Rochefoucauld, a mountaineering pioneer — in a skirt, no less! A century later, the legendary Pic du Midi d’Ossau still makes legs tremble, with its tooth-like silhouette piercing the sky.
Even today, the Pyrenees draw in hikers, climbers, and trail runners, especially during the Grand Raid des Pyrénées or along the famous GR10, a route stretching from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. And though the weather can be unpredictable, the experience is unforgettable: with high-altitude lakes, perched villages, and breathtaking views, the Pyrenees offer a wild yet soothing landscape.
