About Victory of Samothrace
A symbol of power and movement, the Victory of Samothrace embodies the excellence of ancient Greek sculpture and the ultimate expression of triumph. Dating from the 2nd century BC, this masterpiece represents the goddess Nike, personification of victory, proudly standing on the prow of a ship. Her flowing drapery, sculpted with exceptional skill, gives the impression of wind sweeping across the statue, conveying dynamism and intensity.
Discovered on the island of Samothrace in 1863 by the French archaeologist Charles Champoiseau, the statue was transported to the Louvre, where it has been displayed since 1884 on the grand Daru staircase, a location that enhances its monumental and dramatic effect. The Victory of Samothrace is particularly admired for the sense of movement and freedom it conveys, despite the loss of its arms and head over the centuries, which has sparked numerous theories about its original pose and the objects it may have held.
A masterpiece of Hellenistic art, the statue continues to inspire artists, historians, and art enthusiasts around the world with its energy, majesty, and timeless beauty.
