Jerusalemis a cosmopolitan city in the Middle East that occupies an important place in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions. Historically, its old town included four districts—one Muslim, one Armenian, one Christian and one Jewish. These districts are surrounded by ramparts. The portion of the ramparts we can still see today was built between 1535 and 1538. The city is regarded as “holy three times over”, as it is the location of the most sacred sites in Judaism (the Kotel or Wailing Wall) and Christianity (the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the site of the tomb of Christ), as well as the third most sacred site in Islam(the Esplanade of the Mosques, where the al-Aqsa mosque is situated). In total, there are no fewer than 56 holy sites in the city.
The Line depicted the skyline of Jerusalem as seen from the top of a building located in the Yemin Moshe district.
