Yesterday, by John Lennon & Paul McCartney

One morning in 1963 Paul McCartney woke with a tune he couldn’t get out of his head. First, he put some light-hearted lyrics to the tune but his producer George Martin encouraged him to find some words more in keeping with the melancholy of the song.McCartney recorded it as a solo with his guitar, a major first for the band. This was quite a gamble, so much so that George Martin suggested adding three violins and a cello. The result was a great success and sales of the album Help, which featured the song Yesterday, went on to sell three million copies.
